Follow The Breadcrumbs

11/13/2015

During the journey of building our website, we came across several features that are not available with the free version of Weebly.  One of those being breadcrumb navigation.  You know, the links found at the top of many websites that link you back to the previous page you were on and also provide you with a means to back track through the pages you previously visited.   Actually, the feature is available when you build a store but since only 5 products are allowed in the store with the free version, we were left with the problem of how to incorporate this feature on the rest of our pages.

So...we turned to the almighty Google.  Low and behold, someone else had encountered the same problem.  The solution?  Add the links manually to each page.  We used the template provided and we'll tell you how we did it step by step.

We created a page and titled it Breadcrumbs.  Then we went through each page starting with the Home page and determined where all of the links on that page link to.   We typed each of those paths onto the Breadcrumbs page.   It may seem a little confusing just reading it so we'll give you an example to help explain.

Suppose you have a website whose home page has two items to buy.  In this case, your home page  might have two "Buy Now" buttons.  When a customer clicks on the button, it links to (or takes them to) that item's description page.  So the path that the customer follows or navigates is from the home page to the item description page.  For this you would type "Home Page > Item1 Description" as the first path on your Breadcrumbs page.  The next path to list on your Breadcrumbs page would be "Home Page > Item2 Description."

We then looked through all of the paths listed on the Breadcrumbs page to find the final path for each page in our website.  We  copied it and pasted it at the top of the corresponding page where we wanted the breadcrumbs to appear, as shown in the  info-graphic example below.  We then turned the text of the breadcrumbs into links to the corresponding pages.

And voila!  There you have it...breadcrumb navigation for FREE!
