A Homemade Christmas:  Fast & Easy Christmas Gifts To Make For The Sports Fan In Your Life

Christmas is fast approaching, and if you haven't finished your shopping, we've got a quick idea for the sports fan in your life.  Today we'll step you through what we did to make this quick and easy, inexpensive sports ornament.

First, I outlined the shape of a football, keeping in mind that a 1/4" seam allowance is needed.  I then cut out the shape to use as a pattern.  I took an 8 1/2 X11 piece of brown felt, folded it in half, and cut the felt around the football shaped pattern piece.  I cut a small hole on one tip of the football .  The other option, is to trace an oblong shaped jar of petroleum jelly to draw the shape of a football.

Then, I cut the felt around the football shaped pattern piece.

Next, I cut 5 small strips of white felt, to act as the lace on the football.  I also cut two round strips for the white stripes on the football.

I sewed the laces onto the football, starting with the middle lace directly in the center, then working from the middle out sewing one side then the other.

Then I sewed the two stripes on each side.

Determine the favorite football team of your giftee.  Then use those colors to embroider the team's logo and their name on the football.   In my case, I used the Raiders because I have many family members who love the Raiders.  Tip:  Of the team's colors, choose the lightest color so that it will show up well against the dark brown of the football.  I used black to embroider the name.  In hind sight, I should have used white so that the letters would show up better.

After embroidering, I sewed the two pieces of the football together, with the wrong sides facing together. I sewed all around the edges of the football, leaving an opening to turn it inside out.

I stuffed it with poly-fil, attached the chain, and sewed the opening closed.

It didn't come out as good as it could have but I plan to do an update with better results.

And there you have it!  A fast and easy gift or stocking stuffer for the Christmas enthusiast, sports fan, or collector in your life!
