We've been busy creating our new website! Many hours go into building the website and there are many things we had to consider. The first and most important was choosing which platform to use. We narrowed our choices down to SquareSpace and Weebly. We ultimately decided to go with Weebly because it has the least amount of letters in the domain name and the editor is pretty straight forward and easy to use. We are currently using the free version with plans to upgrade soon.
Some of the obstacles we ran into while creating our website are the limitations to using the free version. Unfortunately there is a limit to the number of products you can have in the online store. The free version only allows 5 products, and only one option for each product. Since we will have more products than that, we had to build our store from scratch by using many different pages. It is a bit cumbersome but still maintains the basic functions we need. Weebly's help guides were very useful in aiding us to understand how the editor works, and there is a chat feature that helped as well.
Another issue was that the shipping features were only available with the paid versions. As a result, we decided to charge a flat rate for shipping.
The search feature is also only available for paid versions so an option we are considering is to use a custom google search.
The next issue we will attempt to deal with is embedding a video to our site. The HD Video feature is not available for the free version. There is the option to use YouTube but since we do not currently have a YouTube account, we're still figuring out other alternatives.
