Our Gift To You:  A Head Start On Your Summer Dresses

Summer will be here soon, have you unpacked your summer dresses?  If not, we've got one for you.  Get a head start on summer by sewing a summer dress with our free dress pattern.  It's a simple dress, so it's pretty easy to sew.  Follow along with us  and we'll tell you how we made it.

Step 1:  Gather Materials

The materials we used were fabric, matching thread, scissors, measuring tape, paper, and pencil.

First we had to find a suitable fabric.  Since it's a summer dress, we wanted it to be a light fabric that flows and moves with the body.  Being on a low budget, we couldn't buy such new fabric so we decided to use a shower curtain that we had on hand.  Yes...a shower curtain.  A shower curtain?  Yes...a shower curtain, really.   We recommend this as an alternative to fabric if you can't afford to buy expensive fabric.  We purchased a new shower curtain at GoodWill for a few dollars.

We then drafted the pattern using a measuring tape , paper, and a pencil.

Step 2:  Sew The Neckline and Arm Holes

After cutting the fabric to the pattern, we began by sewing the neckline and arm holes with a quarter inch seam allowance.   We then hemmed the bottom of the skirt with a half inch seam allowance.

Step 3:  Sew The Sides

Once the neckline and arm holes were complete, we sewed both sides of the dress with a half inch seam allowance, and voila!  The dress was complete.

Step 4:  Wear With Or Without Belt

Our final step is to determine which way to wear it.  It can be worn without a belt, allowing the dress to flow to full length.  Or it can be paired with a belt, and pulled up and over the belt for a shorter, more flirty look.  Either way, we're somewhat pleased with the results, so we want to offer you the opportunity to create one for free by using our pattern.    We're offering  this free dress pattern when you subscribe to our mailing list in the sidebar.  Just sign up and contact us via email to receive the free pattern.  You can find our contact information on our FAQ page.  We encourage you to share your finished projects with us in the comments.
